What makes this photo remarkable is that just a few years prior I was riddled with cellulite, overweight and never exercised in my life.  I know what it takes.  And I know how to get you there – no matter where you’re starting from.

1. Don’t Miss Your Sign Post!


My Uncle once gave me some very wise advice…”Belinda, don’t get so caught up in life, that you miss the sign posts”!

In other words, as we travel along the pathway of our life, from time to time, sign posts appear – trying to point us in the right direction. It could be an opportunity to apply for a new job, an invitation to attend a unique event…or just reading a simple blog post like this…that opens the door to a whole new life changing world you never knew existed.

Think about it…I bet you can remember a few times in your life where an unexpected opportunity changed your life in ways you never could have imagined prior.

Today, if you know deep down you could look and feel a lot better (not only about your body, but your health and happiness), if you have this niggling feeling that it’s time for serious change but you’re not sure what the next step is, if you’re increasingly uncomfortable with the status quo of your life – then LISTEN!

These are not just random thoughts or feelings; it’s your intuition telling you NOW is the right time to change.  Even if you’ve failed in the past, if you seize the moment when the signpost presents itself, you will succeed.  Why?  Because it’s the right time, it’s YOUR time.

2. Channel Your Desire


Once you’ve recognized your “sign post” now you need to channel your desire to change.

Life has so many distractions, pressures, responsibilities and challenges, that even the best intentions fall by the way side.  Don’t let this happen.  Focus intently on your new path, remind yourself daily of why you want this.   Don’t get side tracked, distracted or discouraged.  Keep your eyes on the signpost and keep putting one foot after the other in your new direction.

3. Harness Your Energy


Once you’ve started down your new path harness the inspiration and energy that your new beginning brings.   Stop playing the victim or martyr and allowing everyone around you to dictate how you feel and what choices you make. Wake up every day and put your absolute best energy into you – your food prep, your workouts, your healthy choices.

Don’t allow energy vampires to suck away your time and effort, wasting it on thoughts, activities and people that never give anything of real value back to you.   Be ruthless!  It’s OK to put yourself first.  A fitter, stronger, healthier, leaner and happier you means everyone in your life benefits.

4. Face Your Fears 


At this point, I often find people’s fears get the better of them.  They see the sign post, they harness their energy for change but suddenly all the old doubts and fears come back..

“I’m excited but nervous and afraid of change”

“I’ve tried (many times) before and failed”

“I’m not worth it”

 “I don’t have the time, I can’t afford it, I don’t deserve it”……

“What if I really do achieve my goals??!”

Fear, doubt and uncertainty are completely normal.  But that doesn’t mean you have to allow them to dominate your thinking.  When the voice of doubt and fear comes along, let the thoughts go…..let them float away, pass through your mind and drift off into the distance.  Don’t hang onto them, don’t allow them to take hold by mulling over in your mind, feeding them with negative emotions and wasting your precious life energy.

Re-focus back on channeling your positive desire for change.  Consciously choose what thoughts to focus on, past fears and uncertainties are NOT going to dictate how you feel today and what actions you are taking. You know why you want this, you know you’re worth it, and you’re prepared to do whatever it takes.

5. Accept Delayed Gratification


Here’s the biggie.

You can’t have your cake and eat it (no pun intended).  Well, that’s not quite true, you can still enjoy your favorite treats, but in moderation and at the right time :)

More to the point, you have to be prepared to delay gratifying your physical and emotional desires for the reward of the body you want in the future.

When you feel like sleeping in or eating chocolate cake or chips – you simply say “No, I am not going to let my body dictate to me, I am not going to give in to short term emotional wants – if I sacrifice this short term gratification now I will enjoy the sweet reward of my best ever body in the future”.   You will get the pleasure or your ultimate body and it will feel far more deeply satisfying and longer lasting than a sleep in or bar of chocolate ever will!

6. Change Your Day


If you only take one thing away today….take this.  Getting the body you want is not about huge change, hard change, dramatic change – it’s about making small, incremental changes consistently.  Read that again!

Small.  Incremental. Consistent.

Read this and let the truth of it soak deep into your soul.

Change your day, change your body, change your life….

Hello Belinda. 2 days ago I came to know you on Internet. I started reading your blogs. I visited your website. Watched the Video you sent on email. The idea of building muscle density and gaining muscle strength is so wise rather than just trying to loose weight or sizes. Can you talk or tell more about increasing stamina as well?

Hi Kavita, thank you. Stamina is important but even more so is training with intensity during your workout. Intensity doesn’t mean going fast, doing high impact or heavy weights. It simply means going beyond your comfort zone, getting your heart rate up and often sweating. You may also feel muscle burn. With these things you know you’re stimulating the muscles adequately to see visual changes over time. The ratio of muscle fibers you have (slow versus fast twitch) will determine your natural capacity for endurance versus power. Improving that performance means progressively challenging yourself and being consistent. Focusing on training intensity I find is a good benchmark for seeing results! I have to tell you. I have just started working out again after my third kid. And today I looked in the mirror and have been feeling very discouraged as I don’t see any change at all. I do feel better I wake up with more energy and I look forward to going to the gym, but physically I don’t feel that i look good. I eat very well. I have just joined orange theory fitness, and I work out about 3 to 4 days a week. Is three weeks an unreasonable time to see change? Reading your newsletter and finding you on Facebook, has given me a little bit of hope. Anything you can tell me to help me take my mind off of the immediate physical gratification? The numbers on the scale haven’t changed either. Kind of feel like throwing my scale at the window. LOL

Hi Eva!! I understand how you’re feeling. It does take time for momentum to build. Sometimes 4-6 weeks of being consistent with your exercise and eating. It might feel like a long time, but think about how long you haven’t been doing these things lol. The body is amazing, given a little time things will change. Hi Belinda,

I have been training very hard for several months now and would consider myself extremely fit and strong. I had my body fat tested and came out at 19%, but I carry an all over layer which I hate considering how fit I am. My body just does not show its true fitness level!!
I would like to get down to 15% but the layer will not shift! I already eat extremely well already but I do enjoy my evening glass of wine – i think this is what holds me back sometimes!
I am not adverse to hard work and will train to the point of near exhaustion, which I do nearly 5 times a week. But it does not shift!!! Arrrghhhh

Hi! Very happy/jealous for your transformation and will power!! I would love do what you have accomplished. I have been trying very hard. I have been doing very low carb for 4 years now and low impact exercises just about everyday. I did lose about 25lbs. But I just can’t seem to tone up. My belly pouch from having kids is a huge insecurity for me. I am also slowly trying to incorporate good carbs(starchy ones) as well as fruit back into my diet again. Was curious if your plan would be right for me? ?

Hi Micheline, great to meet you and well done on losing 22lbs. Many women experience some sagging and loss of tone after losing weight, if they don’t do exercises specifically designed to firm and tone the muscles. Muscle shapes, lifts and defines the body.

Hey Tara!! No running. I am not a big fan of running (unless someone loves to run). Interval exercise and slower, focused moves especially for the female body are a lot more effective for fat burning and toning. I hope this helps and would love to see you on the program and coach you :)

Hi Amanda, congratulations on your life change…awesome!! I used to be like you believe it or not….I hated even walking up the stairs. What turned things around for me was two things….

First, realizing that the discomfort of exercising actually led to an amazing feeling of achievement (and visual body changes) and that reward was enough motivation to get out of my comfort zone.

Second, finding something I actually enjoyed doing. This sounds like a no brainer but so many women miss this. Our body and genetics make us better at some things than others and I firmly believe not matter what body we have – or history – there are some physical activities and exercises we can enjoy doing. Hi Belinda, I’ve been working out 3 to 4 times a week for 4/5 months doing cardio, strength training, weights and jogging and although I have seen some changes, I’m not getting the results I want. My diet is low carb, low calorie with a cheat day here or there. I still have cellulite on my thighs/hips and a small pooch on my belly. I do have some muscle tone in my stomach and I can see some in my arms but it’s not what I’m striving for. I am 35, have had 3 kids and my weight fluctuates from 146 to 149. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong to not get lean, sculpted muscles. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! Thank you!!

Hi Crystal, great to meet you and thanks for your message. There are a few factors to consider. The mix of cardio, strength training, weights and jogging is critical. Doing too much steady state cardio can wear your body out and make it hold onto, rather than lose fat. On the other hand, circuit style bodyweight training focused on the female trouble zone you mention – will build strong muscle, to help firm up the cellulite areas and increase your resting rate metabolism. Second, I am not a big fan of super low carb – as often the body (especially females) will hang onto excess calories making it harder to lose weight. I prefer to focus on starchy carbs versus fibrous carbs – and the timing of those during the day. These are a few thoughts off the top of my head. If you’d like to send me your stats and photos via my Help Desk I can comment in more detail and see if my programs would be suitable for you :) I hope this helps! Please don’t give up or get discouraged. I normally find, it’s simply a matter of getting you on the right program that’s specifically for women 35 plus (hormones) and that’s designed to be sustainable long term without feeling deprived or exhausted. Hi Crystal, my pleasure :) Determination is a very powerful thing. Steady state cardio is where you run, or bike or do some activity that get’s your heart rate up (and sweating) but where you maintain the same pace the entire time – think jogging for example. Hi Amanda!! Crikies! ABSOLUTELY! I am 51 and in better shape than I was at 35 years old. Yes you CAN reduce body fat, get rid of cellulite and tone up. Yes it will take commitment (working out 3 times a week) and some changes to your eating – but if you are focused and determined you can definitely achieve a body you are proud of and feel good living in! Please tell me a little more about yourself – your current weight, what exercise you’ve been doing (if any) and what your eating is like (and alcohol) – then I can advise further on how quickly you can see results once you start making some changes. Is seeing your story my sign post? I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 11 years ago. I cannot overheat. I had total hysterectomy 11 years ago and two c-sections years before that. Have had two different cancers and three surgeries in the last 12 months. I’m in full-on recovery mode. Can I really lose this stomach after three abdominal surgeries? It’s where I need to lose most of my weight. It’s time to do something, but physically just can’t do a lot. Recommendations? I’m 46.

Hello Mia, thank you for posting – YES absolutely this is your sign post. I’m sorry to hear about your serious and multiple challenges…you must be very strong and resilient to have survived all that and even be here posting today! Something is better than nothing and it’s relative to where we are at personally in our life journey.

I’m assuming you’re under the care of good doctors and physiotherapists who can guide you on the path to getting physically stronger again with gentle exercises. I just turned 37 and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I divorced after 9 years of marriage and 3 kids. I was in the fittest shape of my life. 126 lean lbs. I felt great. I was working out and running. Then I met my husband. Slowly I stopped working out then after a few years even stopped running. Our daily lives consisted of going to work coming home and hanging out together (which I love) but drinking beer to relax after a hard day, smoking too many cigarettes, playing on our smart phones then eating a really late dinner before going to bed. This lifestyle has left me fatigue and 148 fat lbs. I’m ready to pay attention to me signpost and I see it every morning but get distracted once 5:30 hits. Then all I can see is hanging out with my husband. Sleep… Repeat. HELP

Hi Jennifer, lovely to hear from you and thanks for posting. I am sure many women reading this can relate to your experience, on some level. Daily habits like a few beers, a glass of wine every night, eating comfort food or takeaway..gradually becomes a “lifestyle”; it sneaks up on us…and before we know it we really don’t like what we see in the mirror. You’ve already taken the first massive step by recognizing your signpost!! Something has to change, NOW. The problem is..when we look at where we are versus where we want to be..it feels like an insurmountable mountain of change. But remember: Small. Incremental. Consistent. Start believing in the “ripple effect”. Just one positive change today, can turn the tide of your life, forever – because you’ve changed direction, you’re now going forward into a healthier YOU..not backwards.

Choose one thing first, listen to that inner voice – it will guide you. Maybe it’s the late eating, maybe 1 beer instead of several, maybe it’s going for a walk in the morning – do something. Something is better than nothing. And you’ll be surprised how you wake up the next day, feeling more positive and motivated..and ready to make another small, incremental, consistent change. Hi Leanne, great question! In the past I travelled a lot for work also, too many hotel rooms to remember….and those morning buffets…crikies. Get Lean is based on natural, whole everyday foods, like fresh veges, fruit, eggs, some dairy like yogurt, lean protein (chicken, meat and fish) and some whole grains. It’s doable with travel and not being able to cook your own meals – and I will give you some personalized guidelines to make it easy :)

The other great thing is that you can do the workouts in your hotel room with no equipment and you only need a small space. I’ve done this and still do – it’s so awesome. And you feel great…you never have to skip a beat even though you’re away from home.

My name is Tracey I am 39 . Firstly I want to congratulate you and the other women featured as change and belief in yourself are never easy. I am embarrassed to write this but I need help in finding happiness in myself and hopefully everything else will fall into place, I am 175cm tall and weigh 73.6kg and have lotsof cellulite and flabby bits I find it really hard to find a diet that will help me and be suitable for my kids. Most programs are very costly and as a single mother this can be make it hard to maintain. I have a really low self worth at the moment and not liking my appearance isn’t helping and I don’t want to set this example to my children I want them to grow up with self worth and confidence and I know this has to start with me. I was hoping to over get a little more information about your program like does it require gym membership or the purchasing of costly equipment and or supplements. Also as I donot have a computer can your program be attained using a android tablet?

I have had a lot of life changing traumatic events happen over the last year….loss of employment, major Cancer diagnosis.

Hello Cathrina, lovely to hear from you – I’m very happy my blog bought some sunshine into your life! But sorry to learn about the traumatic events of the past year, they are two massive life challenges. I am so inspired by your courage to face the future, taking ownership of your own destiny – refusing to be a victim and putting the responsibility on others to make things change for the better. YES!! You can start again, starting today :) Even just a small change, one little adjustment to your daily routine can make a huge difference to the flow of energy in your life. Suddenly things don’t look quite so dim. Suddenly you have the energy to change; those little “victories” add up to big results over the longer term.

I discovered a while back that “age” is relative…and for you at 46 there is someone at 60 wishing they were you lol! I have a very good feeling about 2015 for you.. As you get busy doing what YOU can..to make yourself feel better inside and out, it will draw the new opportunities and support you need into your life. I am looking at a toning program. I have just lost 15kg but I can’t lose the tummy fat.

Can I do your program without going to the gym? Therefore can I do this from home?

Hi Ange, lovely to meet you :) Congratulations on losing 15kg! Well done.

Many women have the same experience as you, that after losing a fair bit of weight, they lack body tone are left with stubborn fat deposits. This can be fixed by building lean, strong muscle. And the beauty is, that muscle will help burn more fat. So it’s a win-win.

Absolutely, Get Lean is available to Kiwis. In fact, you may be surprised to know..I now live Wellington :) My Dad was born here, and I came back to live earlier this year – I love it.

To answer your other questions:

1. Yes, you can do my workouts at home. Many use only bodyweight.
2. They are designed to help you lose weight AND build lean muscle – to tone and firm the body from top to toe.
3. I specialized in female training, so all my workouts target the trouble zones, like the inner thigh, saddlebags, butt, tummy and the back of the arms.

Hi Belinda,
I think the amazing success these women have accomplished is fantastic. I am thrilled for these young ladies, but I never see any posts or comments about women 60 plus that have made similiar, if not at least satisfying results. I am going to be 66 in a month. I have several health issues, but even my doctor says to look at me, no one would ever know. I am slim, but my body has changed from toned to flabby and saggy! Gross! Is it possible, at my age, to turn my body around to be toned, and turn this aging body back a few years. I know if I had been able to keep working out and taking care of my body like I did 10-15 years ago, I would still be in shape. But, I have had some major health set backs. When you are young you think you will get “back to it” and regain what you’ve lost. As we age that becomes harder-physiccaly and motivationally. Appreciate any feedback. P.S. Although I’d love to wear a swim suit and feel comfortable, the skin tone as well as muscle has aged a lot! I live in CA and would love to get my arms and legs back-at least.

I’m very happy you’ve mentioned this very important observation! We need more 60-plus women getting into the beautiful body zone. A while back, I did an interview with Marny Gilluly who achieved visible ab muscles for the first time in her life at the age of 62 – you can read her story here. I hope you find it inspiring!

And here’s another motivating story..about my Mom lol! At 62 she did her first sky dive then went on to compete in the Masters Olympics Swimming for the first time. In early 70’s she transformed her body through good nutrition and exercise – today she is 74 and amazing. Her legs are better than many women in their 40’s. Here’s Mom’s story.

I’ve worked with many women in their 50’s and 60’s who’ve turned their bodies around (unfortunately most of them are too shy to share their stories and photos online which I am sure you can appreciate – but maybe you’ll be one of the first and go on to inspire many others, I hope so). Sue, it’s absolutely possible to get results that are more than satisfying – even great results. So please don’t give up hope. The fact you’re posting here tells me you’ve got it in you – to dig deep and find that motivation again and turn your body around. Yes there are challenges, both physically and mentally – but doing the little things right consistently add up to big results over time.

There are many things you can do both for your exercise and nutrition – and your skin, that can turn back the clock. I’d love to help you do that! Bel xo

P.S. For all the women reading this, please glean some wisdom from Sue’s post. Many when they hit 45-50 years, find their physical activity and nutrition slips – then their hormones start changing and everything goes pear-shaped, literally lol. It’s all about finding a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable, long-term, that’s the secret…

Hi Belinda!
I am super interested in getting results like Olivia did in four months!
I have been eating healthy for the past three months and exercising with a personal trainer three times a week. I am 39 and never exercised before and like you lived on a diet of junk food. I never knew how much energy you could have not eating sugar!
I have toned somewhat and definitely feel stronger but would like to build muscle like Olivia has done in your before and after picture. I would say I look similar to her before picture at the moment. I especially love the definition in her arms – my pet hate about my body!
Is this something I would be able to achieve on my own though?
I really can’t afford to keep seeing a personal trainer three times a week and I feel like I need to do more than I am doing. Not really sure where to go from here?

When I look back on some of the most successful transformations – it was the little changes that over time that really made the difference. I think it’s because that way it becomes an easy “way of life” or habit….and before we know it, we’re living a healthy lifestyle and our body is changing…
