Days when you want to crawl under the covers

Have you ever wanted to hide under the covers and hope the world just goes away?

Sometimes it feels so hard to be “up” or “positive.” And I know listening to someone say, “smile!” or “cheer up!” when you’re feeling that way doesn’t help at all.

When I went through a difficult divorce in my late 30s I wanted to become a permanent resident under the warm covers of my big bed.

When I left my homeland of Australia for Panama it took a lot of courage and a huge effort at the beginning to establish myself in a new culture. Quitting a secure job and moving halfway across the world, far away from family and friends, required more confidence than I had, so YES there were some mornings
when I wanted to stay in bed and feel safe under the covers…..

I’ve been there and know the territory under the covers very well.

When you feel this way, it’s probably a sign that you haven’t had enough downtime lately.

We all need downtime – not self indulgent self pity or beating ourselves up – but just time to feel bad.

Cocoon yourself up in bed, with a good book or have a hot shower and stay in there.

Watch your favorite movie in your dressing gown. Shut the door and give yourself permission to feel down. That’s OK!

Comfort yourself. Have a cry if you need to.

Then, after you are done feeling bad, remember all the things you have come through. Decide that you are not going to let others steal your happiness.

Count all your achievements, remember all the compliments and positive words spoken to you over the years – and soon you will start feeling a whole lot better.

At this point, I find a little pampering time goes a long way – do something that makes you feel really good.

If you can learn to deal with these down days rather than ignore them and let them build up – then they will be just speed humps on your journey that just slow you down a little, rather than a wall that forces you to a crashing halt.

So, it’s OK to crawl under the covers some days and feel a little sorry for yourself – but don’t say there!

Thank you so much for this blog. I have so been feeling like this lately. Life is just so busy and hectic and yesterday I just had a do nothing day. Spent the day at home, had a sleep at lunch time, watched a movie. Today I am facing the world again, going to the gym and looking forward to having a holiday over Christmas. Thank you again. Jodi
