Eat & Lose Weight Over Christmas: Unlock Your Fat-Burning Hormones

cheatIt’s the holiday season and you should be getting into spirit of things.  But secretly you’re anxious at the thought of having to say no to foods that are “off the plan” (and the  pressure that involves).  Not to mention, stressed about putting back on weight you’ve lost and ruining the results you’ve worked so hard for during the year.

I’ve seen quite a few Christmases since I decided to live a lean life. I know all the challenges. Today, coming up on 50 years old, I still feel compelled to learn as much as I can to give myself the best leverage for a great body and awesome health through wise and unique nutrition habits. Living like this on a daily basis and seeing the results, I feel an obligation to share what I’ve learned – so you can experience these benefits in the exact same way.

You see, it’s not just about watching and worrying about calories.  It’s about nutrient profile and nutritional density of each calorie you consume.

Your body is designed to function with clean, pure, chemical-free nutrients.

This is not just about “low calorie” weight loss, it’s about nutrient dense calories that optimize your body’s circulatory, digestive, endocrine, lymphatic, muscular, nervous, respiratory and skeletal systems – giving you the fuel and the building blocks to function at your peak for every facet of your health which includes optimal fat burning.

The good news is, by doing so you can maintain your ideal weight without feeling deprived, hungry or missing out on your favorite treats over Christmas. The secret is how to activate and optimize your fat burning hormones.

Activate and optimize your fat burning hormones.

The right foods will balance your fat burning hormones.  The wrong foods will disrupt this balance making you prone to storing fat and gaining weight.

So, let’s look at how you can enjoy your food over Christmas and still stay on track for a lean New Year.

1. Eat Low Glycemic Foods

Foods packed with refined and high-glycemic carbohydrates stimulate insulin and spike your blood sugar to create hormonal havoc, triggering cravings and the tendency to overeat. Increased insulin promotes fat storage by blocking glucagon, which is vital for breaking down body fat and burning it for energy.

Substituting low glycemic carbohydrates for high ones, will keep your insulin and blood sugar levels down and your body in fat burning mode.

2. Use a Healthy Sugar Alternative & Eat More Protein

Sugar is a refined carbohydrate and is always burned as an energy source before fat. The more refined carbohydrates you eat, the higher your blood sugar and insulin levels will be leading to excess calories being stored as fat.

On the other hand, protein stimulates the production of glucagon which in turn promotes fat metabolism.  It’s a fantastic way to manage hunger, helping you feel satisfied with less calories.

Substitute stevia for sugar and add extra protein and bam, you’ve on track to staying lean while still enjoying your favorite foods.

3. Reduce Chemical Exposure

Harmful chemicals and toxins in our food and environment, such as pesticides, herbicides, petrochemicals, every day household cleaners, certain plastics and even cosmetics – are stored in your body fat.

The more chemicals you’re exposed to, the harder it becomes to lose weight, simply because fat is your body’s way of protecting itself.

One group of harmful chemicals is xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens have an estrogenic effect in the body which disrupts your natural hormone balance making you prone to storing fat, especially in the tummy area.

Do an inventory of chemicals around your home that you are exposed to daily and make some changes. Click here for a list of common environmental estrogens.

4. Add Fat Burning Ingredients

There are common (yet surprising foods) that can stimulate your metabolism, activate your fat burning hormones and eliminate toxins to help prevent weight gain and lose stubborn fat.

A few that I eat regularly are: fresh and dried figs, pears, ground flax seed, ginger, cinnamon, pine nuts and eggs.  Combine these in one recipe and boom, a power-house fat burning treat.  Check out this power-packed fat burning recipe that has it all!

Quick & Easy Fat-Burning  Muffins

  • 1 scoop of natural or vanilla protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon aluminum free baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of stevia
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • 3 large, ripe pears peeled, cored & diced
  • 1/3 cup ground flax seed
  • ¼ cup pine nuts
  • ¼ cup dried chopped figs
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger
  • 1 ½ cups quinoa or gluten-free all purpose (plain) flour
  • ½ cup low fat milk or almond milk

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F).
  2. Beat the eggs then mix in the chopped pear, apple sauce, flaxseed, dried figs, pine nuts, cinnamon and ginger.
  3. Add the flour slowly, mixing very well.
  4. Dissolve the protein and baking powders in the milk, mix in slowly until the consistency is thick but still drops off the spoon.
  5. Oil or spray large muffin tin and scoop in. Distribute evenly.
  6. Bake for around 35 minutes until well-risen, golden, and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Calories per serve: 160.1, Fat: 5.3g, Carbs: 22.2g, Fibre: 4.4g, Protein: 6.4g

5. Detox Your Body

If  you do over indulge or are worried about chemical build up then make sure you detox!  One of the easiest ways to do this is by starting your day with a detox energy shake.

Here’s one of my favorite recipes!

Energizing Detox Morning Shake (liver booster & gut healer).

  • 1 cup of spinach, cabbage, bok choy or beets
  • 3/4 cup fresh or frozen berries of choice
  • 1 ½ cups almond milk
  • Juice of 1 lime or lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon essential fatty acids (ie. flax oil)

Calories: 244.7, Fat: 18.0g, Carbs: 21.4g, Fibre: 8.4g, Protein: 3.3g

This amazing shake will do wonders for your body!

Hi Bel!

Hormones are SO important in weight loss – I know this very well! Thanks for the recipes too – can’t wait to try them! I know you’ve trained a lot of people and I was wondering, have you ever helped people who struggle with a LACK of appetite? I could stand to lose 10 – 12 lbs and firm up everywhere, only I just usually don’t feel like eating! When I do, I fill up after a couple bites. Granted, I struggle with getting quality sleep and I know that whacks out leptin and grehlin levels. Any ideas?
