Get Out of Your Comfort Zone and Grow!

It’s no secret that I haven’t always been a fitness model.

You see, I used to be like most women. I didn’t exercise when I was younger, mainly because I struggled with asthma. By the time I cruised into my 30’s, I was doing the typical executive desk-job thing. I lead a fairly sedentary lifestyle. And yes, I was out of shape.

But you know what? Something was missing. I realized I had stopped dreaming. I was in a rut. And because I was doing the same thing day in and day out, nothing changed for me.

Then one day I decided to start dreaming again. Here I was 30-something about to go surfing for the first time. I had thought about it many times before, but it just seemed too wild (and maybe too athletic for me). It was waaay out of my comfort zone.

But I tell you what: The day I went surfing changed my life.

You see, the act of taking up surfing in my 30’s wasn’t so much of a physical breakthrough as it was a mental breakthrough. I stepped out of my comfort zone and I grew as a person that day. Suddenly I had a new outlook on life. Never again would I let perceived obstacles hold me back!

Fast forward a few years and now I’m in my 40’s. I’m living in Panama, I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m a fitness model.

I don’t say any of this to brag. Not at all. Instead, I’m sharing to let you know that it’s not too late for you. All you have to do is take a step out of your comfort zone… then another… then another – and trust me, you’ll change your life. You’ll grow. You’ll become the person you’ve always dreamed you could be, both physically and mentally.

If you’re not ready to step out of your comfort zone, then here’s what I suggest: Make that first step a small step. You don’t have to bounce a kilometer out of your comfort zone your first time out. Just take a small step – stretch a little. Then next time you can take a bigger step, a bigger stretch.

Let me give you a few examples…

· You want to start lifting weights but you keep putting off. Try this: Commit to going to the gym this week and lifting light weights just to get a feel for them. Or try this: Hire a personal trainer for five sessions.

· Push yourself in the gym. Some people get stuck in the rut of doing the same ol’ routine using the same weights. Today when you go to the gym, add a little weight to the bar (slightly more than you think you can lift 8-12 times). Or if you’re currently doing eight reps, try to do 10-12 with the same weight. In other words, stretch a bit beyond what you think is possible!

· You want to enter a bodybuilding or fitness competition. So today you request the forms and fill out your registration. That’s the first step. Tomorrow you’ll start training to win!

· Go after your dreams. What have you been dreaming about for years, but you keeping making excuses not to start? Today is the day you start. Whether it’s a physical or mental task, today is the day you break down the mental barriers and show yourself that you’re strong, creative and independent.

For example, maybe you too have always wanted to surf. So today you go buy that surf board, because tomorrow you’ll hit the beach! Or maybe it’s a creative task, like writing a book. I challenge you to write two pages today.

Here’s the point…

It takes just a few small steps outside of your comfort zone before you break down your mental barriers and start rolling forward based on momentum. So start it right now – what can you do TODAY to step out of your comfort zone?

Hi Belinda

Just giving you an update…..Im still managing to stay out of my comfort zone. Tomorrow is Australia Day for us & i’ve always wanted to try skiing & guess what Im going to give it a whirl. Trying to find something to wear that I would feel comfortable in was a bit of a challenge tough. Cant wait till tomorrow:-)

Wow Belinda, just reading this has made me realise I can step out of my comfort zone. I train 6days a week but really want to lose some excess fat. The only way I can do this is to change things around & get out of my comfort zone. Thanks for the advice. Im getting into that”NEW ME ZONE” today, thanks to you Belinda:) I will keep you posted on my progress.
