How I get motivated to workout

I remember when I first started training at the gym.

Some days it was a real effort to drag myself there after work.

Whenever I felt like that I always asked myself “do I ever regret going to the gym afterwards?” and the answer is of course always, never!

I always feel better for having gone, proud of myself and having that post workout shower is always awesome no matter how tired I am. So that always gets my butt going.

Now that I’ve been at this a while, I still have to ask myself this sometimes to help me get motivated, especially when there isn’t a competition on the immediate horizon to force me to stay in shape. And when I was busy putting together my Get Lean Program my training regime suffered a bit.

It probably wouldn’t have been noticeable to anyone else but I could tell my muscles weren’t quite as defined and my body fat percentage was a bit higher. It would have been easy to shrug it off but I knew I owed it to myself and my clients (especially my clients who come to me for personal training) to get motivated and hit the gym.

I set new goals for myself and use the following motivation
strategies every day:

Reminding myself everyone has tough days. It’s how we deal with days like this that separate the average from the great.

If I want a great body, then dig deep and suck it up. Today is the day I train to be great. It’s the litmus test. These days when I feel like it’s really hard to get into gear – I get excited, knowing that today is my breakthrough day.

If I can train hard and go home soaked with sweat – then I have achieved over and above average. During my workout if I feel myself flagging or dragging – I stop and give myself a pep- talk.

When I feel tired during my workout I imagine that I have to demonstrate to someone how to do the next exercise. And I give 150% as if it was my first set.

Or I remind myself how far I have come, and not to let myself down. I get a cold towel and wipe my face between sets, suck down my favorite workout drink, crank up my ipod and tell myself I am a champion.

Unfortunately there are no shortcuts. But you can get yourself super motivated – and that makes all the difference.

Great tips Belinda. I guess one day soon I will have one of those can’t be bothered going to the gym days! All I gotta do is look around at the people in the gym and compare them to the dream I have of me in my head and that gets me firing! Lol

Everyone tells us to exercise, but few share those ‘ I don’t feel like gymming today’devilish thoughts! Thanks for letting us know we can have those ‘cheat’ thoughts, yet motivate ourselves to overcome them!

Hey Deanne – yeah for sure. I guess when I think about it, a lot of the ways of motivating myself have come from the success I achieved in other areas of my life before I started to working out….thanks for reminding me!
