It’s time to really let yourself go

Countless times over the past several years I’ve heard people say “I let myself go” during a period of time, as a way to explain why they were out of shape.

It’s a phrase I wish I could ban because unfortunately it’s also all too common to hear someone talk about an overweight person and say “they let themselves go.”

If you (or someone you know) has gained weight and is not currently in shape, I suggest it’s because of a lack of letting yourself go, and usually for good reason. For example:

You didn’t let yourself go to the gym because you needed to spend that money on your kids piano lessons instead.

You didn’t let yourself go out and buy weights and a treadmill because you work 10-12 hours a day and just couldn’t see how you could even find the time to workout at home.

You didn’t let yourself go to the local farmer’s markets or food co-ops to buy healthy foods as often as you wanted to because you had a tough year financially.

You didn’t let yourself go for the daily walks you used to love because you were heartbroken after a relationship breakup and your body wanted to curl up on the couch and watch TV every evening rather than go for a walk.

You didn’t let yourself go get in shape because you had a baby and were sleep deprived and could barely manage to eat properly and had no energy to exercise.

You didn’t let yourself go exercise consistently because you love to run and your climate is too cold for half the year and you couldn’t figure out another exercise routine.

For 37 years I failed to let myself go and do any exercise at all and when I went through a divorce I lost even more motivation. My thighs were full of cellulite and with every passing year I saw the body I knew disappearing and being replaced with something I really didn’t like.

If you’ve failed to “let yourself go” for similar reasons, please realize it’s not because you were lazy or selfish.

That weight gain happened because you have a lot of responsibilities and just couldn’t let yourself go and make yourself top priority. That’s understandable. It happens to us all to easily.

Also, it’s also very likely that no one showed you how you could lose weight and get in shape in your current circumstances. It’s hard to do something if you don’t know how.

When I started to “let myself go” and gave myself permission to live out my dreams and desires – I was shocked at how quickly my life changed for the better.  I suddenly had more energy, exciting things started to happen, I woke up looking forward to the day (!!!!) and I had the courage to take advantage of new opportunities when they arose.

And now I’m here to help you make this the year you finally let yourself go!
