Redefining Happiness

We all know the saying “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone”?  Well happiness is a bit like that.   Often it’s not until the circumstances of life bring us unhappiness – that we realize what we’ve lost. I am sure you can think back to moments in life where you were incredibly happy – but then due to unexpected events – that all suddenly changed.

Which brings me to the idea of “redefining happiness”.

It’s only natural to have wants, desires and dreams that construct our vision of what “happiness” is.  This picture of what makes us “happy” ironically determines, how happy we feel. I say ironically, because the very picture or vision you have for your happiness can in fact, be making you unhappy!  Very unhappy!  Simply because you are far from the vision you have for your life.

???????????????????????

There was a time in my life when happiness was the thought of being a full-time, stay at home Mum (I bet all you Mums are having a good chuckle at this right now).   In fact, I dreamt about it for over a decade, collecting baby clothes, making plans and having a little cry each month when my period came. But it wasn’t to be.  My point is, I had to redefine what happiness meant to me based on my changing circumstances.  Otherwise, I would be doomed to always feel some degree of sadness and loss – for the children I’d never had.

It’s inevitable that life will bring its disappointments but we are each responsible for our own happiness.  No-one else can “make” you happy. Maybe, just like me, your life circumstances have changed.  Maybe they’ve changed dramatically.  The dreams and vision you once had may not be relevant anymore.  Be courageous enough to face that head on – and then set about redefining what happiness is to you, now, today and going forward in your life.

Think about these two questions…

How happy are you with your life in general?

How happy are you right now?

Maybe you answered each question differently; this is a great starting point for redefining happiness! Think more deeply about your every day routine versus the big picture of your life. And as you think about what makes you happy, here’s a hint….happiness is about experiences, not things.

Please don’t put your happiness on hold until you have “acquired” or “achieved”. You’ll be waiting a long time. You may die waiting. Instead, make your happiness about experiences — both daily (what are the little things you can do each day to increase your sense of pleasure, contentment and well-being) and in the bigger picture (what experiences are really meaningful to you)? Focus your energy and efforts on these and you will be deeply rewarded.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on happiness, maybe you even have a personal story or quote to share…please post below!
